Joe James

It was in February of 1932, Marvin and Opal Larned James welcomed their fourth child,  Joseph Larned James, born February 9, 1932.
Growing up on the farm in Maries County, where a full day’s work was expected, didn’t inspire a farming career, but farming and family did however instill a sense of responsibility in young Joe.
After high school, 1949, Joe joined the U.S. Navy.  He was stationed in San Diego, CA. Aboard ship, Joe became a communications technician, sending/receiving teletype communications to sub-marines at sea.  California and the navy life was a growing-up experience for this young man.
In 1955, that sense of responsibility guided him to the College of Pharmacy in St. Louis, completing his degree in 1959….Cuba Rexall was the starting place some 55 years ago, following directly with Bourbon Rexall, Fairway Rexall, Uptown Pharmacy, Strauser Drugs, U.S.A. Drugs and Walgreen. It was 2009, that the College of Pharmacy in St. Louis recognized Joe’s 50 years of service to his profession.  He continued working, keeping his license active through 2012. That sense of responsibility found great purpose in his professional life. For Joe, the drug store was always open! He liked people, he was a kind man with a built-in disarming candor and a friendly, forward personality.
Remaining to honor his memory are his wife, Audrey; five daughters; twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. They are:
Joan and Doug Strauser, and their children, Tyson and Rebecca, Sarah, Brett, and Luke, Laura and Ri Armstrong, and their children, Lily, Dina, Ri, and Davy of Aurora, CO, Marsha Valutis  of West Palm Beach, FL, and her daughter, Ruby, Jennifer James of Sullivan, and Mandy Doumit of Kirksville, MO and her children: Derek, Madeline, and Sam. The great-grandchildren are children of Tyson and Rebecca.
Joe has one brother, Dave James of Vienna, two sisters: Mary Alice Kastner of St.Louis, and Dolores Hempe of Jefferson City, MO; nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Those not remaining are his parents, Marvin and Opal James of Vienna; one son, Mark John James.
A time of gathering for family and friends was held on Friday, December 5, 2014 from 3-8 p.m. at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy are suggested to the Sullivan Public Library or the James Community Cemetery in the name of Joe James.  Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, December 6, 2014 in the James Community Cemetery, Vienna, MO.

Mary Dorothy Brendel nee Page of Bourbon, MO, passed away on Thursday, December 25, 2014 at the age of 92 years, 10 months and 3 days.
Dorothy, as she was known by her family and friends, was born on February 22, 1922 in Crawford County, MO to the late Walter and Kathryn (Menkhous) Page. She graduated from High School and on February 5, 1949, was united in marriage to Francis Brendel. Dorothy was a homemaker and was very family orientated. She did enjoy crossword puzzles and quilting and was known for her Chocolate Sundaes and fresh baked cookies, which she always had ready for the grandkids. Dorothy never spoke ill of others. Her motto was, “If you can’t say something nice, say nothing at all”. Many times, over the years, as family and grandkids came to her for advise, her one bit of wisdom that would cover any question or any topic was, “Well, Honey that’s just the way things are.” A kind and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends.
She is survived by one son, Stephan Brendel of Bourbon, MO; four daughters, Carolyn Hertel of Bourbon, MO, Annette Adams and husband, Russell, of St. James, MO, Fran Hunter and husband, Larry, of Cuba, MO, and Christine Padula of the state of New Jersey; one brother, Walter Page; 14 grandchildren, Steve Brendel, Ted and Tim Hertel, Cynthia Cubas, Andrew and Michael Adams, Danny Sampson, Leslie Bone, Christine Drapkin, Stephanie Rudloff, Kathryn Padula, Roxanna Samrad, Jasmine Roloff, Farah Maisonneuve; 27 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
