Bertie Mae Campbell, of Sullivan, MO, passed away Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the age of 81 years from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
Bertie was born on November 11, 1933 near Robertsville, MO to Mildred and Lee McDaniel. The family later moved to Sullivan where Bertie graduated from Sullivan High School. She also graduated from the University of Missouri at St. Louis after age 40; an accomplishment she was always proud of. She briefly taught in the Sullivan School District and in a one-room school at Pea Ridge. Bertie was also a probation officer for Franklin County and served on the Sullivan School Board. She was well known among many residents since, for many years, she and former husband John Scott owned and operated the former Western Auto and Western Furniture stores, which were originally opened by her father. Bertie married Dana O. Campbell in 1982 and resided in Kirkwood, MO before returning to Sullivan in 1995 where she again became active in community affairs. Among her many accomplishments, Bertie served as Past President of the Sullivan Garden Club, and a past member of the Planning and Zoning Commission. Bertie served also on the Board of Directors of the Sheltered Industries of Meramec Valley (now EMPAC), which provide job opportunities for the disabled. She was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church of Sullivan and in 2011, she contributed the funding for construction of a pavilion on the church grounds dedicated to the memory of her mother. Bertie was also an accomplished seamstress and a creative painter and decorator.
She is survived by her husband Dana of the family home; children, Georgia Scott of New Orleans, Louisiana, Wendell Scott and wife Jamie of Springfield, Missouri, Brad Scott and wife Susan of Des Peres, MO and step-daughters, Julie Hoffman and husband Joe of St. Louis and Jill Campbell of Fort Worth, TX; three brothers, Jim McDaniel and wife Charlotte of Wildwood, MO, Wayne McDaniel of Wentzville, MO and Randy McDaniel of Sullivan; five grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Bertie donated her body to Washington University School of Medicine in hopes it will add value in providing medical services and treatment to future generations.
