Velma Hulsey
Velma Fay Reynolds Hulsey, beloved wife and mother, passed away on Sunday, Sept.. 28, 2014 in Fairbanks.
Velma was born on Nov. 21, 1943 on the family farm near Rolla, MO. Velma was born first, followed by her twin, Thelma, a few minutes later. Grandma Reynolds served as midwife. Her brother, Richard, recalls the day, “I remember dad telling me that it was a nice November day and that he was digging potatoes when the twins were born. Our family doctor came out the next day to certify that they were born and that he said they would be OK.”
Just prior to her passing, Velma and Leroy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 11, 2014, and her son’s birthday on Sept. 26, 2014. Velma had a number of mini-strokes on or near March 7, 2002 (12 years ago). Since then, her health had progressively declined.
In the years prior to 2002, Velma loved life. She loved classical music, opera and big bands. She loved dinner theaters, people and loved to entertain. Over that period of time, she and her immediate family lived in Champaign, IL; Rolla, MO; Cary, NC, and Fairbanks. Prior to becoming a stay-at-home mom for her son, she worked in retail and for the Cary, NC school district.
After arriving in Alaska, she created a small company and made pot holders, pillows and other items for the home. She loved meeting new people and during the summers, spent her time at Pioneer Park, working in the shops and with people; she was so excited to meet people from all over the world.
She loved children and while in other states, would volunteer to babysit the neighbors’ children and usually traded childcare so each family could have a break and not worry about their children. Soon after arriving in Fairbanks, she worked several years at the UAF pre-school. This was an exciting time for her. In addition to her love for children and family, she absolutely loved small dogs and almost always there was one or two in the home.
Velma’s surviving immediate family are her husband, Leroy; son, Craig, and two grand-sons, Nichols Chamberlain and Alyx Hulsey. She is survived by four siblings and their children; older brother, Charles Reynolds; a twin sister, Thelma Campbell; a brother, Richard Reynolds, and a sister, Carolyn Honse. She is also survived by two in-laws and their children, Dennis Hulsey and Sharon Fann. In addition to the immediate family members, she is survived by nine nieces, eight nephews and ten cousins.
A service to honor and celebrate the life of Velma is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 at the 1st United Methodist Church, located at 915 2nd Ave., Fairbanks, AL 99701.
Cards and flowers can be sent to the church. If people want to provide a donation, the money will be given to NAMI of Fairbanks. Donations can be sent directly to NAMI at P.O. Box 72543, Fairbanks, AL 99701.
