Sylvester Thurlow Minx, known to most as Butch, departed this life in Rolla, MO, on February 27, 2017, having reached the age of seventy-three years, nine months and two days. Butch was born in Cadet, MO, on May 25, 1943, son of Thomas Cerlow Minx and Mary Gladys Minx nee Head. On April 25, 1970, he was united in marriage to Fannie Jo Bernsen, known to all as Jo, and two children came to bless this union.
Butch is survived by his wife Jo Minx of Lonedell, MO; by his children, Jason Minx and wife, Lori, of Ponte Verde, FL, and Tammy Jo Geisert and husband, Tim, of St. Clair, MO; by three brothers, Tommy Minx of Richwoods, MO and twin brothers Jerry Minx and wife, Wilma, of Richwoods and Garry Minx of Pacific, MO; by eight sisters, Leona Gibson and husband, Billy, of Ozark, MO, Wilma Dierker of Grubville, MO, Frieda Slankard of Sullivan, MO, Carol Dodson of Sullivan, Joanne Ossendorf and husband, Butch, of St. Clair, Rose Dierker and husband, David, of Lonedell, Elaine Boyer and husband, James, of House Springs, MO, and Peggy Robinson of Villa Ridge, MO; by six grandchildren, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Mary Minx, and by two brothers, Donald Minx and Paul Ray Minx.
Butch was a Christian, having been raised in the Baptist faith and believing in the Lord as his Savior. He was proud to have served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, enlisting on July 15, 1963, and receiving his honorable discharge on June 16, 1967. After his discharge from the military he started working for Hot Point as a sales representative. They were later bought out by General Electric then Hobart and when he retired after thirty-seven years, he was working in sales in the commercial division of the company. In addition to working full time, he loved raising cattle and hay. He enjoyed hunting and spending time outdoors caring for his home and property. He was a talented musician and playing the guitar and singing in The Minx Brothers Band was his favorite pastime. He was truly a family man and having family barbeques and reunions was what he enjoyed the most and he was passionate about making sure everyone had a good time. Each of his children and grandchildren were his pride and joy and he cherished the time they spent together.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 3, 2017, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair, MO, with the Rev. John Pursley officiating. Entombment with full military honors was held at the Haven of Rest Mausoleum in Crestview Memorial Park, St. Clair, MO. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Missouri Veterans Home in St. James, MO.
